What’s up Seattle?

ご機嫌いかが、シアトル！

Thank you, John.

ジョーンありがとう！

It is an honor to stand here tonight.

今宵この場に立つことを光栄に思います。

It’s also safer to stand here, rather than go back and sit over there 

また、ここに立つことは後ろの席に戻り座っているより安全なんです。

because as you just saw in the video Junior may have put glue on my chair.

なぜなら、皆さんもビデオでご覧頂いた通り、ジュニアが私の席に接着剤を仕掛けたかもしれないからです。

Of course you did!

いや、絶対やってるね！

This must be Juniors way of making me give a speech. 

これはジュニアなりの私にスピーチをさせる方法に違いないですね。

So here we go.

という訳なので始めましょう。

23 years ago, my life forever changed,

２３年前に僕の人生は永久に変わりました。

ｗhen I became a Seattle Mariner.

それは僕がシアトル・マリナーになった時でした。

I am beyond grateful to this organization and this city.

僕はこの組織とこの町に誠に感謝しております。

Thank you, Howard, and John, for attending.

ハワード、ジョン、この場に居合わせてくれてありがとう。

Thank you, Jerry and Katie.

ジェリー、ケイティありがとう。

I am touched to have Chuck Armstrong here as well.

ここにいらして下さり感動しています。

I must also mention someone who is not here, Mr. Hiroshi Yamauchi.

そしてここにおられない人についても触れなくてはなりません。

それは山内博さんです。

He was a longtime owner of the Mariners.

彼は長い間マリナーズのオーナーでした。

I’m forever thankful to him for giving me the the opportunity 

to play in Seattle as a first position player from Japan.

彼が僕に日本から初の野手としてシアトルでプレーする機会を

与えて下さった事に永久の謝意を表します。

I am touched by the warm support of so many 

Mariner Hall of Famers, who made time to be here tonight.

僕は今夜ここに時間を作り列席して下さった沢山の

マリナーズ殿堂入りの方々の温かい支援に感動しております。

It has been a pleasure getting to know Alvin.

アルビンと知り合えて光栄に思います。

Once a fan shouted to me, “Hey, I loved watching you and Alvin play together.”

かつて一人のファンが僕に叫んで来た事がありました。

おーい、君とアルビンが一緒にプレーしているのを見るのが大好きなんだよー！

At first, I was insulted.

まず初めに、僕は侮辱されました。

I thought “Come on man! How old do you think I am?”

「待ってくれよ！僕を何歳だと思ってるんだ？」と思ったんです。

He retired way before I came here.

彼は僕がここに来るずっと前に引退してました。

But then, I thought Alvin is such a kind man. 

しかし、それからアルビンはとても優しい男だし、

It would have been nice to be his teammate. 

彼のチームメイトになれてたなら良かっただろう思い、

So I didn’t correct the fan.

そのファンにはツッコミませんでした。

【ジェイミー・モイヤーとの思い出】

Three of my first teammates are here.

最初のチームメイトの内３名がここにいます。

Edgar, you were the most humble professional, and you haven’t changed in retirement.

エドガー、君は最も謙虚なプロ　でしたね。そして引退しても変わってませんね。

Dan, you were our iron backstop on the field and our iron support in the clubhouse.

ダン、君は球場で鉄壁でした。そしてクラブハウスでは鉄壁のサポート役でした。

And Jamie~! Thanks for coming all the way out here.

ジェイミ〜！はるばる来てくれてありがとう。

As a lefty you were so clever, but so talkative.

左利きの君はとても頭の回転が良く、とてもおしゃべりでした。

When I first met you, you kept talking to me in English for 30 minutes!

初めて会った時、あなたは３０分間も僕に話かけてくれました！

And I had no idea what you said.

僕は君の言ってる事が分かりませんでした。

Now my English is a little better, but I still can’t understand most of what you say.

そして今、僕の英語力は少し伸びました。しかし、君の言ってる事のほとんどが今だに理解できません。

Even so you played until you were 49 years old and

that is something I greatly admire.

そんな君ですが、４９歳までプレーされましたね。

これは僕が大いに敬服するところです。

【ケン・グリフィー・ジュニアとの思い出】

I am honored to join this new Marinners team.

Thank you all for being here to welcome me in person.

僕はこの新しいマリナーズに加わり光栄です。

お集まりの皆さん、僕を迎え入れて頂き感謝致します。

And then there is a guy (whom) I like to call George.

そしてここに僕が好んでジョージと呼ぶ男がいます。

You know him as Ken Griffey Jr.（George Kenneth Griffey Jr.)

皆さんはケン・グリフィー・ジュニアとしてご存知だと思います。

He was my idol even before I came to America.

彼は僕にとってアイドルでした。しかもアメリカに来る前からです。

But in 2009, he returned to Seattle and

I finally got to be his teammate.

しかし２００９年、彼はシアトルに戻り、

遂に僕は彼のチームメイトになりました。

Yes.

そうです。

He is a jokester.

彼はおふざけ屋さんです。

But for me, he’s also a true professional.

しかし僕からしてみれば彼は真のプロ選手です。

He helped me in more ways than I can express.

彼は僕が表現しきれないくらい僕を助けてくれました。

Being his teammate is truly one of my career highlights.

彼とチームメイトになる事は僕の野球人生における

真の光の当たる部分の１つでした。

Thank you Marilyn for representing the legacy of your husband.

マリリン、夫の遺志に成り代わりご出席してくれてありがとう。

Together she has faced all the challenges 

with me in the journey to this moment.

この瞬間に至るまでの道のりにおいて、

They have given me great support for my entire career.

I am sorry that my first manager is in Seattle,

Lau Piniella cannot be here tonight.

僕にとってシアトルでの初監督だったルー・ピネラさん

が今宵ここにいないのが残念です。

One of my first memories here was created by him.

僕のシアトル初の思い出の中の１つが彼によって作られました。

When we returned to the clubhouse after winning my first opener,

Lou kissed me right here on the cheek.

開幕戦勝利後クラブハウスに戻った時、ルーは僕にキスをしました。

ここです。頬にです。

The manager gave me a big wet kiss

that doesn’t happen in Japan and I was shocked.

日本ではありえないような水分たっぷりのキスを

監督はくれました。そしてビックリしました。

Honestly, I was scared.

正直、怖かったです。

I thought to myself if this is a custom in America

I might not make it here.

もしこれがアメリカの習慣であるならば、僕はここで

やって行けないかもしれない。。と自分に語りました。

Remember.

思い出して下さい。

We won 116 games that year.

私達はあの年、１１６勝しました。

I wasn’t ready for 116 kisses from the manager.

僕は監督から１１６のキスを受ける準備が

できていませんでした。

Thankfully I carried on and I am so grateful I did.

ありがたいことに、僕は続けられ、やりとげた事に

とても感謝です。

Even though I retired as an active player,

baseball and Seattle have never left my heart.

僕は現役選手として引退したにも関わらず、

野球とシアトルは僕の心から決して消えません。

Baseball will forever be my soul and my mission is to keep 

helping both players and fans appreciate this special game.

野球は永久に僕の心であり、僕の使命は選手とファン達が

この特別なスポーツを楽しみ続けれるお手伝いをする事です。

Now I am honored to serve 

as special assistant to chairman Stanton:

今スタントン会長の特別補佐として務められ

光栄に思います。

a position that allows me to work with players 

in spring training and during the season.

春季キャンプやシーズンの間選手達とお仕事ができる

立場にあります。

Most days, I still wear the Mariners uniform

and I do so proudly.

ほとんどの日で、僕はまだマリナーズユニフォームを

着れており、誇りに感じながら着ております。

【現役選手達へ】

I want our players to know I am with you 

in your fight to be the best.

選手達には君達の戦いには一番になる為に

僕が共にあることを知っておいてもらいたいです。

I was 27 years old when I came to Seattle.

僕がシアトルに来た時は、２７歳でした。

I could never imagine (that)

僕は想像できていませんでした、

my career in America would last 19 seasons 

and that I would still be in Seattle today.

アメリカで僕の野球人生が１９シーズン続くなんて、

そして僕が今日もシアトルにまだいられるなんて。

With that in mind, I would like to say to the current players 

your future has possibilities that you cannot imagine as well.

その事を念頭に入れると、現役の選手達の未来も想像できない

可能性だらけなんだと言いたいです。

So embrace it by giving your best 

without imposing limits on yourself.

なので、今の状況を受け入れ、限界を決めつけずに

ベストを尽くして欲しいです。

If a skinny undersized guy from Japan

can compete in this uniform and then stand 

before you tonight to accept this honor,

then there’s no reason you cannot do it either.

日本から来た規格以下の細身の男がこのユニフォームを

着て戦い、もし今宵この栄誉を受け入れ皆様の前に

立つことができるのであれば、君達が出来ない

という理由がなくなってしまいます。

Of course, you will face struggles and frustrations.

もちろん、君達は苦闘と困難に直面するでしょう。

I know because I faced (toは不要）them every year.

僕には分かります。なぜならば僕は毎年それらに直面

していたからです。

Without imposing limits on yourself, you must find the desire

and the passion to overcome those daily challenges.

自分の限界を決めつける代わりにそれら毎日の困難を克服する

情熱と願望を見付けなければなりません。

That is a way to maximize your potential.

Then, you can achieve the unimaginable (things).

それが君達の可能性を最大限にする方法なんです。

そして、想像しえなかったものを達成できるのです。

【ファンの皆様へ】

And finally to the outstanding fans of Seattle,

では最後に、大事なシアトルのファンの皆さんへ

you cheered loudly for me as a new player (at)

that first game 21 years ago and you never stopped.

あなた達は２１年前の初出場試合で新人の僕に大きな声援を

送って下さいました。そしてそれはずっと止みませんでした。

When I returned in 2018, it was as if I had never left.

２０１８年に僕が帰って来た時、まるで僕が一時も

離れていなかったかのような状況でした。

The passion with which you welcomed me back 

touched my heart.

僕の帰りを歓迎してくれた情熱は僕の心に響きました。

It is one of the best memories of my career

and I will never forget the feeling.

それは僕の野球人生の中で一番の思い出の１つであり、

その時の感覚は一生忘れません。

It is my greatest honor to have played for you

as a Seattle mariner.

シアトルマリナーとして皆さんの為にプレーできた事

は僕にとってこの上ない栄誉です。

I will keep doing my best for you and the Mariners.

僕は皆さんとマリナーズの為、ベストを尽くし続けます。
