すみだ向島EXPO実行委員会は、2022年10月1日（土）から31日（月）の一か月間、変わりゆく東京下町を舞台に繰り広げる街なか博覧会「すみだ向島 EXPO2022」を開催いたします。コロナ禍で人と人との距離感に意識が向く中で、長屋文化が築いたご近所付き合いの魅力に焦点を当て、今年のテーマを「まあい、いま、まわる」に決定しました。来場者と出展者、街の人々が混ざり合い、一様には表せない距離感（＝まあい）を体感できるよう、さまざまなしくみをご用意します。一度訪れたら終わりではなく、街と関係性を持ちながら“ずっといられる”博覧会をつくります。

そういう出会いを作れるんじゃないか
We can create such encounters.
そういうことをコンセプトとして考えました
That is the concept of this EXPO.
今年で3年目を迎えるこの墨田向島expoという博覧会は
We have the third year of the Sumida Mukojima EXPO.
イベント3年目なんですけど
This is the third year, but
この街自体が10年20年100年ぐらい前のその風景と
the view of this town still remains as of 10, 20, and 100 years ago,
そこで暮らしていた人の行き方は残っている
and the people who lived there are still here.
このエキスポに関わる人たちは
Most of the people with this EXPO
普段からこの町で
live in this town
住んでたり関わってたりしている人達がほとんどで
or do something here on a regular basis.
本当に1年間この町に関わりながら
We have activities in this town through a year.
でもこの1ヶ月は本当に次の未来の1ヶ月2ヶ月を作るために
For this one month, to create next one or two months
特別に何か表現で示す
we express something special.
そういう集まりなので
We have such a common goal.
常に続いている暮らしの延長の中のそういう博覧会です
This exhibition is in the extension of our lives always going on there.
今年のテーマは「まあい、いま、まわる」という
The theme of this year, “distance, this moment, around.”
この独特の距離感で暮らす人たちの一応ではない
Our people has various senses of distance.
距離感(まあい)みたいのを今年のテーマにしました
This year’s theme is something like those senses.
墨田は本当に昔と今がすごい複雑に共存する街
Sumida is where the past and the present coexist.
その中でも墨田の中でも向島地域というのは
In Mukojima area of Sumida,
さらに本当にまだそういう暮らしあるのとか
we still find such lives like…
こんな事が街の中でできるのっていう
“Wow! I didn’t know we can do this here!”
もっと驚きに満ちた暮らしが続いているエリア
I can call it an area with full of surprise.
この日常の中でも驚きの暮らしがあるのを知っているのですけど
We have surprising lives in this daily life, but
この1ヶ月は特に
especially in this month
そういうこの町の普段では見えないところまで
To the aspects you can’t usually see,
この街を公開してみてもらう
we expose this city.
そういう意識で街に関わる人が集まってるので
People involved in the city gather with that mind.
特別な一か月なると思ってます
So this month should be special.
なのですみだ向島expoに来ていただくと
If you come to Sumida Mukojima EXPO,
普段見てない新しい色々な視点が絶対あると思います
you will find a variety of new view points (you don’t usually notice).
この会期にぜひ来て頂きたいし
Please come here in this period.
もういる 住んでいる本当に僕らのちょっと近くにいて
For people already here or neighbors,
そういう人も見てない風景がこの日常にあるので
there are scenes they still haven’t seen in this daily life.
そういう人も一緒に来ていただいて
We are looking forward to such people.

何か爽やかなように作ってるけれど
一歩裏めくればちょっと怪しいそうな感じが良い
It looks something fresh, but once you see it from a different angle, it gets to look a little weird and nice.
このエキスポはさらにその
未来の地域の新しい可能性や
いろんな視点をみんなと作っていく未来への一か月です
This EXPO is a month for future to create new possibilities in the future
or a various viewpoints together.

大正14年とか
昭和の一桁 昭和七年とか二年だとかいう建物を
今回提供してますので
We expose buildings built in 1925 or those built in 1930’s.
やはり皆さんビックリしたんじゃないですかね
中入ると「え〜！」っていう
I guess a lot of people were surprised like,
“Wow! at the sight of the interiors.
たぶんおじいちゃん
おばあちゃんの家よりも古いぐらいの
皆さん多分行ったことないよな若い人は
Those buildings are older than houses of your grand parents.
I believe you young people have never visited such architecture.
ということで今回ですね
いくつか本体一つずつ紹介したいぐらいなんですけど
So I’d like to show you one by one, but
それはどなたかやられると思うんで
maybe someone will do.
お年を召した方も「懐かしい昔こういう家だったよね」って言って
I think the elderly say, “oh, it reminds me my old house.”
若い人は若い人で「こんな世界があるんだ」みたいな
On the other hand, the young may say, “I’ve never seen such a town.”
昭和一桁の世界とか分かると思うんで
You will experience（the beginning of） Showa era, 1930’s.
アーティストの方の力が素晴らしい
The artists here have brilliant power.
３年続けてるんですけれどですけども
It’s been three years (since we started).
また今年もなんか外国人の方もたくさんいらっしゃってるし
A lot of foreigners have come visit here also this year.
またちょっと違ったEXPOになりそうな感じしますね
This EXPO may be (a bit) different in a way.
期待も持てますね
Must be fun!
様々な人達が一緒にこの街で展示をしてるのが見所です
The highlight is that a variety of people have unique exhibits.
この町は古い建物と新しい建物が
うまく共存できるようなことを日々僕たちは考えてるんですけども
We always try to have old and new buildings coexist here.
アーティストを招いて
東京の京島という小民家を使って滞在制作をしております
We invite artists and have create works together
in a small house in Kyojima area.
見所は普段のギャラリーとか美術館とかで発表している
作品の展示というよりは
本当にアーティストがそこで生活をしたり作品を作ったり
そういう生の場所を見れるっていうのが
見どころです
You can see the artists live and create artworks.
It’s more lively than just browsing around in a museum.
That’s the highlight of this EXPO.

結構そのイベントが終わってからも
Even after the event,
俺らはここに来たり
ここで働いたりさせてもらったりもしてるんで
we still stay and work here.
見てるとなんか今こう
世の中がどんどん潔癖になってく中で
I feel everything tend to be cleaner and cleaner,
なんかここは割とそうじゃない部分があって
but I don’t feel that way when I’m here.
なんか結構色々つまんないことが言われてる
People care about not important matters these days,
世の中の中で割と本当の意味でいろんな人がいて
We have various people in a true way here
それが成立してるっていう
and they coexist.
この場所を一回来てから
すごく気に入って
Once I came here,
I got to love this place very much.
この街全体も
This whole town and
この京島駅っていう建物自体も
this Kyojima-sta. building itself.
様々な人がいつも出入りしてて
A variety of people alway visit there.
常に面白いことが起きてる空間なので毎年のように遊びに来てます
Something exiting always happen here.
That’s why I come here every year.
現代の令和っていう時代に人が社会の中で孤立していったり
孤独を感じていく時代の中で
In Reiwa era where people isolate in a society or feel isolated,
昭和的なその地域のつながりが濃かったり家族とか
I felt the relationship is strong in this Showa-era-like community
その小さなコミュニティだけじゃなくて
and not only a small community like family but
社会全体のコミュニティが成立しているなっていうのを感じて
a whole society exits successfully.
そういう社会ってこれから災害の時とかパンデミックとか
In case of disaster or pandemic, such a society
いろんな危機の中で大事なことだと思うんですよ
is important in dangers from now.
東京でそれが成立しているのは奇跡的なことだなあと思って
I think it’s miracle it holds up in Tokyo.
ここにそういう動きの中に少しでも自分も参加したいし
In such a movement, I’d like to take a small part (at least).
一過性の展示とかイベントとかと違って
This is different from a temporary exhibit or event.
そのイベントが始まる前も
Even before and after the event,
その終わった後も常に人が出入りしていて
people always go in and come out.
表現の現場になっているって
This is the place to express arts,
作家たちが話し合ったり
some artists talk each other
作ったりなんかそういう常に動いてる生き物みたいな
and others create works.
場所なんですよ
This is a place moving like an animal.
そういう場所を
一応成果として展示として見せる形になってるんですけど
These places are shown as exhibits anyway.
なんかその雰囲気を是非来て味わっていただけたらなと思います
Please come and feel such atmosphere.
でもなんかすごい下町な感じがあるし
This old town may make you feel nostalgic.
あの旅行みたいな感じで楽しいんじゃないすかね
You may feel you are traveling different world.
楽しいと思います

あのね 銭湯もあるしね
Also we have public baths.
たこ焼きもあるし
Takoyaki, too.
あそこの店のメンチカツがうまいっす
I love a meat cutlet of that shop.
全然東京都ぽくないっていうか
This town is something different from Tokyo.
東京の下町とか全然わかんなかったっすけど
I had no idea what a low town of Tokyo is.
でもなんかちゃんと線引きがあるって言うか
People here have certain personal spaces.
妙な距離感があったりとかして
I feel weird distance sometimes.
こういうなんかちょっと変な場所って言うか
Something like a bit weird place
それになんか変な感じとか
In addition, I feel something strange
怪しい感じが実はある
and odd actually.
感じのところで東京でやってるみたいなのは
やっぱEXPOだけかなって感じをします
I think this EXPO is the only place to show
such unique atmosphere in Tokyo.
私は墨田をたくさん歩かせてもらって
I have walked around Sumida a lot and
その路地とか民家とか長屋とか面白いところがたくさんある
found its allies, old houses, tenements interesting.
だから街が会場になる 展示場になる 軒下で展示をしたり
So this town can be an exhibition hall
民家をちょっと改造して作ったり
like an exhibit under an eave or renovating an old house.
色々とあの街で顔を出してる展示中のを見て
When I visit my favorite exhibits,
街の雰囲気というのと一緒に作品が見れる
I can enjoy works with this town’s atmosphere.
バックが街だっていうのがなかなか良かったですね
I like this town as a background, too.
そういう中にコンテンポラリーな
作品を展示するっていうのは
なんか業者に刺激があるような感じに見えました
It looks a good idea to expose contemporary works
in there because they may inspire manufacturers.
